Breast Implant Surgery

Breast implant surgery is a personalised procedure designed to increase breast volume, improve breast shape, restore fullness and create better balance between the breasts and the rest of the body.

The procedure may be considered by adults with naturally small breasts, loss of breast volume after pregnancy or weight reduction, breast asymmetry, developmental differences or changes following previous surgery. Breast implants may also be used as part of breast reconstruction.

At ADORN AESTHETICS, breast implant surgery is planned according to the patient’s anatomy, chest dimensions, existing breast tissue, skin elasticity and desired outcome. The objective is not simply to increase size but to create a proportionate breast shape that complements the patient’s body.

What Is Breast Implant Surgery?

Breast implant surgery involves placing a medical implant beneath the breast tissue or chest muscle to enhance breast volume and contour. It is one method of breast augmentation; selected patients may alternatively be suitable for fat-transfer breast augmentation.

Implants are available in different:

  • Volumes
  • Widths and projections
  • Shapes
  • Gel consistencies
  • Surface characteristics

The right option cannot be selected by cup size or implant volume alone. Breast-base width, soft-tissue coverage and overall body proportions are equally important.

Who May Consider Breast Implants?

Breast implants may be suitable for adults who want to:

  • Increase naturally limited breast volume
  • Restore fullness after pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Correct visible breast asymmetry
  • Improve upper-pole fullness
  • Enhance breast shape after significant weight loss
  • Reconstruct breast volume after surgery or injury
  • Improve body proportion and clothing fit

Suitable patients should be medically fit, have realistic expectations and understand the recovery, scars, risks and long-term follow-up associated with implants.

Types of Breast Implants

Silicone Breast Implants

Silicone gel implants

Silicone implants contain cohesive silicone gel and are commonly selected because their consistency can provide a soft and natural breast feel.

Round implants

Round implants provide fullness across the breast and may create greater upper-pole projection, depending on their profile and placement.

Anatomical implants

Anatomical or teardrop-shaped implants are designed with more volume in the lower portion. They may be useful in selected aesthetic or reconstructive situations.

Implant profiles

Profile refers to how far an implant projects forward in relation to its width. Options may include moderate, high and extra-high profiles.

A high-profile implant is not automatically better. The selection should match the patient’s chest width, tissue thickness and aesthetic goals.

How Is Implant Size Selected?

Breast implant size is chosen after clinical examination and detailed measurements. Factors include:

  • Chest and breast-base width
  • Existing breast volume
  • Skin elasticity
  • Soft-tissue thickness
  • Nipple position
  • Degree of breast sagging
  • Desired projection
  • Lifestyle and physical activity
  • Patient preference

Implant sizers, clinical photographs and appropriate planning methods may help patients understand likely proportions before surgery.

Implant Placement Options

The implant may be positioned:

  • Beneath the breast tissue
  • Beneath the breast fascia
  • Partially beneath the chest muscle using a dual-plane technique
  • Beneath the chest muscle

No placement plane is ideal for every patient. The choice depends on available tissue coverage, implant dimensions, breast anatomy and the surgeon’s assessment.

Breast Implant Surgery Procedure

Breast implant surgery is generally performed under anaesthesia. The procedure includes:

  1. Creating a carefully planned incision
  2. Preparing the implant pocket
  3. Inserting the selected implant
  4. Checking breast shape and symmetry
  5. Closing the incision in layers
  6. Applying dressings and a supportive garment

Common incision locations include the fold beneath the breast, the border of the areola or, in selected cases, the armpit.

Recovery After Breast Implant Surgery

Mild to moderate tightness, swelling and soreness are expected during the early recovery period. Acute discomfort commonly improves over the first several days, although swelling and tenderness may continue for several weeks. Activity and exercise should be resumed progressively according to the operating surgeon’s instructions.

A supportive surgical bra may be recommended. The breasts and implants continue to settle over the following weeks and months, so the immediate postoperative appearance should not be considered the final result.

Breast Implant Risks and Safety

Possible complications include bleeding, infection, changes in breast or nipple sensation, scarring, asymmetry, implant malposition, rippling, rupture, capsular contracture, persistent discomfort and the need for additional surgery. Rare implant-capsule–associated conditions should also be discussed during informed consent.

Breast implants are not lifetime devices. Some patients may eventually require implant removal, replacement or revision because of breast changes, implant-related complications or personal preference.

Breast Implant or Breast Lift?

Implants add volume but do not always correct significant breast sagging. Patients with stretched skin, a low nipple position or substantial breast drooping may require a breast lift with or without an implant.

The appropriate procedure is determined after evaluating the nipple position, skin envelope and desired breast volume.
